Paizo To Produce Minis

If you’re like me, you like to use miniatures in your RPG adventures.  I like having a 3d model of my character to help me visualize the environment and encounters, the paper tokens just don’t work for me.  So when Wizards of the Coast canceled production of miniatures, especially with Heroes of Shadow coming, I was really disappointed to say the least.  I had hoped someone else would pick up the ball and run with it and I’m hoping this announcement from Paizo is the start of that even though their press release doesn’t commit to an extensive production.

May 24, 2011 (REDMOND, Wash.) – Paizo Publishing and WizKids Games announce a new partnership whereby WizKids Games will produce a special set of pre-painted plastic miniatures for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Beginner Box, an introductory boxed set slated to release in October 2011.
“We’re excited to bring the Pathfinder property to life via 3-D pre-painted fantasy miniatures” said Lax Chandra, President of WizKids Games, “Paizo’s Pathfinder RPG has emerged as a leader in the RPG category and we are looking forward to working with their great brand.”
“WizKids essentially created the pre-painted plastic miniatures category, and they’ve only gotten better in the years since,” said Paizo CEO Lisa Stevens. “We are thrilled to work with WizKids to bring our iconic characters to tabletops all over the world.”
Pathfinder RPG Beginner Box pre-painted fantasy miniatures will be available at and through WizKids distribution partners worldwide starting in the fourth quarter of 2011.
Hopefully the initial release for the beginner’s box set will be a big success and spawn more miniature releases.  For those like me that enjoy miniatures in their games, let’s hope this is just the beginning.  I really wish someone would pick up the DnD line and produce some miniatures to go with the new classes in Heroes of Shadow, but I think I shouldn’t hold my breath for that one.
